The Department of Environmental Supervision has identified two illegal sawmills in Imereti

The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture’s Environmental Supervision Department has identified violations in the municipalities of Baghdati and Zestafoni through its Western Regional Division.

In the villages of Obcha and Satsable, citizens had installed circular-type sawmill equipment in their household yards. One unit of alder and six units of chestnut logs listed in the Red List were seized from the sites.

As both cases contain elements of a criminal offense, the materials have been forwarded to the relevant authorities for further response.

Combating illegal forest use remains a top priority for the Department. The patrol crews of the Department of Environmental Supervision conduct continuous 24-hour patrols nationwide to ensure the timely prevention, detection, and suppression of environmental violations. In addition, they provide immediate responses to all reports received through the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture’s hotline (153). At the same time, the Department, including its Western Regional Division, actively employs modern technologies. As a result, during 2025, 245 cases of illegal forest use were identified in Imereti alone. 20 illegal sawmills have been sealed.
