The Department of Environmental Supervision Begins Monitoring Sales of Plastic Materials and Products

To prevent environmental pollution from plastics and reduce significant pressure on natural ecosystems, a regulation came into effect on April 1, prohibiting the sale of certain plastic materials and products, including plastic cutlery (forks, knives, spoons, chopsticks, stirrers), plates, straws, drink mixers, and food containers and lids made of expanded polystyrene (EPS), as well as EPS cups and their lids intended for contact with food.

The agency supervising the enforcement of this regulation - The Environmental Supervision Department, a state subordinated entity under the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture - will regularly conduct inspections at points of sale and take appropriate action in response to each violation.

Under the Code of Administrative Offenses, a violation of the requirements of the “Technical Regulation on Plastic Materials and Products Intended for Contact with Food,” approved by the Government of Georgia, is subject to a fine of GEL 1,000 and the confiscation of the corresponding products. In the case of a repeated violation, the fine is doubled to GEL 2,000.
