As part of efforts to combat poaching, employees of the Department of Environmental Supervision under the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture identified cases of illegal fishing using electrofishing devices in the regions of Kvemo Kartli and Imereti.
Two violations were recorded in the vicinity of the villages of Tamarisi and Didi Mughanlo in Marneuli Municipality. Using prohibited electrofishing devices, citizens illegally caught Khramuli in the Mtkvari and Khrami rivers.
An individual was also engaged in illegal fishing using electrofishing devices in the village of Ghvankiti, Terjola Municipality.
Since fishing with electrofishing devices constitutes a criminal offense, the case materials have been forwarded to the relevant authorities for further action.
Combating poaching remains a top priority for the Environmental Supervision Department. The patrol crews of the Department of Environmental Supervision conduct continuous 24-hour monitoring nationwide to ensure the timely prevention, detection, and suppression of illegal fishing, hunting, and other environmental violations. In addition, they provide immediate responses to all reports received through the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture’s hotline (153).
In the first three months of the current year, the Department’s employees identified 85 cases of illegal fishing nationwide.
