The Department of Environmental Supervision has identified cases of fishing with encircling nets
As part of efforts to combat poaching, employees of the Department of Environmental Supervision of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture identified 13 cases of illegal fishing in Samegrelo, Imereti, and Kvemo Kartli.
Offences were recorded in the cities of Senaki, Zugdidi, and Zestaponi, as well as in the municipalities of Khobi, Terjola, Samtredia, Vani, Zestaponi, and Marneuli, on the rivers Chkhoushi, Munchia, Tskaltsitela, Gubistskali, Shavtskala, Tekhura, Dzirula, and Algeti.
Poachers were using encircling nets of various sizes for fishing.
The use of encircling nets in amateur and recreational (non-licensed) fishing is prohibited and is subject to criminal liability; therefore, materials related to the detected cases have been forwarded to the relevant authorities for further response.
The patrol crews of the Department of Environmental Supervision conduct continuous 24-hour monitoring nationwide to ensure the timely prevention, detection, and suppression of illegal fishing, hunting, and other environmental violations. In addition, they provide immediate responses to all reports received through the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture’s hotline (153).
In April of this year, a total of 86 cases of violations of fishing regulations and illegal fishing were identified nationwide.
