The Department of Environmental Supervision Identified 2,664 Violations of the Waste Management Code in Six Months
Employees of the Department of Environmental Supervision of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture identified 2,664 cases of violations of the Waste Management Code from January 1 to June 30, 2026.
Of the identified violations, 713 cases involved environmental pollution with municipal waste; 267 cases involved the open burning of municipal non-hazardous waste or its burning in unauthorized combustion facilities; 250 cases involved environmental pollution with construction or other inert materials; 240 cases involved non-compliance with requirements related to the submission of companies’ waste management plans and the implementation of measures defined by these plans; 85 cases involved pollution of areas with sewage and/or sludge waste; 46 cases involved environmental littering/pollution with animal waste; 5 cases involved failure to comply with requirements and obligations related to the management of hazardous waste; and 1,058 cases constituted other types of violations.
It is noteworthy that the highest number of Waste Management Code violations - 654 cases - was identified in the Kvemo Kartli region. A total of 372 violations were recorded in Kakheti, 250 in Mtskheta-Mtianeti, 200 in Adjara, 184 in Imereti, 176 in Shida Kartli, 146 in Samtskhe-Javakheti, 130 in Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, 18 in Guria, and 2 in Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti.
Violations were also identified in the capital city. During the first six months of 2026, employees of the Department identified 532 violations of the Waste Management Code in Tbilisi.
Ensuring effective state control over waste management is a top priority for the Department of Environmental Supervision. the patrol crews of the Department of Environmental Supervision conduct continuous 24-hour monitoring nationwide to ensure the timely prevention, detection, and suppression of environmental violations. Immediate action is taken in response to every report received through the Ministry’s hotline (153).
