The Department of Environmental Supervision Conducted 2,411 Inspections of Regulated Entities in Six Months
Employees of the Department of Environmental Supervision of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture conducted 2,411 inspections of regulated entities (holders of natural resource use licences, environmental impact permits, and enterprises subject to environmental technical regulations) from 1 January to 30 June 2025.
Planned and unplanned inspections were carried out to assess the compliance of the activities of 190 entities with environmental legislation. These included: 39 inspections verifying compliance with the conditions set out in environmental impact permits, environmental expert review conclusions, or environmental decisions; 10 inspections verifying compliance with the conditions of mineral extraction licences; 9 cases involving the collection and examination of samples from agricultural crops to identify genetically modified organism species; 6 inspections verifying compliance with the conditions of licences for the use of fir cones and snowdrop bulbs; 3 inspections verifying compliance with the conditions of special timber harvesting licences; 1 inspection verifying compliance with the conditions of special hunting and fishing licences; and 120 inspections of vessels entering Georgian ports.
In the first six months of 2026, administrative instructions were issued to 130 regulated entities, requiring them to take mandatory measures to eliminate identified violations within a reasonable timeframe or to refrain from certain actions.
In 2026, the Department will conduct planned inspections of a total of 125 regulated entities.
The planning of inspections of regulated entities is carried out in accordance with a risk-based methodology. Planned inspections represent one of the key foundations for effective environmental control, as they encourage companies to eliminate identified violations and ensure that their activities are brought into maximum compliance with established standards. Alongside planned inspections, the Department’s inspectors also conduct unplanned inspections throughout the year based on citizens’ reports and notifications received through the Ministry’s hotline (153).
