The Department of Environmental Supervision Identified Cases of Illegal Logging in Samegrelo
As part of efforts to combat illegal logging, officers of the Samegrelo–Zemo Svaneti Regional Division of the Department of Environmental Supervision under the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture identified violations in the municipalities of Chkhorotsku and Martvili.
In the villages of Mukhuri and Kurzu, within state forest areas, individuals illegally felled Cryptomeria and sweet chestnut trees protected under Georgia’s Red List. In total, 96 illegally harvested logs were seized and transferred to the designated timber storage facilities of the National Forestry Agency.
The environmental damage caused by the violations exceeds GEL 7,300.
The materials have been forwarded to the relevant authorities for further response.
The protection of natural resources is a top priority for the Department of Environmental Supervision. During the implementation of state environmental control, employees of the Department’s regional divisions pay particular attention to combating illegal logging. Modern technologies are actively used as part of efforts to combat poaching and ensure strict control. As a result, nearly 200 cases of illegal forest use have been identified within the operational area of Samegrelo–Zemo Svaneti during the first six months of the current year.
